Adjusting Contrast with Levels

PSE.NET Technique Tutorial

contrast-before

contrast-after

Contrast can be adjusted in several ways using Photoshop Element. The Levels control provides the most precise way to adjust the tones in your image and is a great tool for altering contrast.

Step by Step:

Use these steps to adjust the contrast in your photo with the Levels control

contrast-01

01To increase contrast in a photograph move the Highlight and Shadow Input sliders in the Levels dialog towards the center of the histogram.

02Holding the Alt/Opt key whilst moving these Input sliders will preview the pixels that are being converted to pure black or white (clipped). Move the sliders in until you see the first few pixels and then adjust the sliders slightly to ensure no pixels are being clipped.

03To decrease contrast in a photograph move the Highlight and Shadow Output sliders in the Levels dialog towards the center of the histogram.
